Rundown on Self-Tanners

written by ERICA DICK October 4th, 2020

I decided to dip my toe in the self-tanning pond about a year ago when I realized the Wisconsin winters were making me paler than I knew was humanly possible. At first I was skeptical, as the word self tanner made me think of an orange, streaky, Jersey shore mess. However, as I’ve done research and tried my fare share of products, I’ve come to learn which are the best and how you can hack each one for the best natural tan.

  1. Kora Organics Gradual Self-tanning Lotion

My friends are probably sick of how often I talk about this self-tanner. It’s a gradual lotion which I absolutely love. That means that the first time you apply it, it’s just a dark glow, and the second and/or third it comes out like a self tan. It looks so natural and Kora has the best non-toxic, organic ingredients which puts it in first place for me.

2. Isle Of Paradise Drops

What I love about Isle of Paradise is that it is drops you can add to your lotion. This makes it so hassle free to use because you can add it to your regular routine. Plus, it avoids the gross smell of self-tanner. It also comes in multiple shades and can be used on both body and face.

3. Tanologist Tanning Water

I stole this from my roommate when I was out of my lotions and was instantly obsessed. It’s a super thin water that you can spray and rub on with your hands or a tanning mit. Either way, the tan will be super glowy and totally streak free. And, it smells amazing.

4. BaliBodi

I’ve never tried BaliBodi myself, but a friend of mine who has sensitive skin swears by it. They have a large selection of products, but I’ve heard great things about their mousse since it’s lightweight and super easy to apply. It also comes in a variety of shades for all skin tones.

5. St. Tropez Express Mousse

I’ve been skeptical of St. Tropez forever, but I was recently convinced to add it to my top 5. Although it can offer a pretty intense tan, it’s not orange if you choose the right shade for your skin tone. If you’re worried about trying something that may not show up, this is one of the OG self-tanners, making it super dependable as it will always offer a pretty dark tan. Their product variety is great too, but I recommend their 2-hour express (but leave it on for 4), to speed up the length you have to keep the nasty smell on.
