My Thoughts On Microdermabrasion

written by NOA DIAMOND. August 29th, 2020

Microdermabrasion is a skin procedure that targets hyperpigmentation, sun spots, acne scars, and pore concerns. It is noninvasive, virtually painless, and safe for almost every skin type. However, it is not recommended for people with active cystic acne because it can cause a flare up or irritation.

So how does it work? Tiny crystals made of aluminum oxide are sprayed onto the skin. At the same time, the crystals and dead skin cells are being suctioned back up into the machine and discarded. While results are temporary (lasting mainly for four weeks), when it is used as a part of your somewhat regular routine, you will notice an overall healthier, smoother, brighter complexion in the long-term. On average, the treatment costs around $175, but can be covered by certain insurances. Certain places may also offer a discount on bundled purchases.

There are a few disclaimers to give before reviewing the treatment. If acne scarring is your main concern, there are alternative treatments that would provide better results for your money. These include microneedling and laser resurfacing. Chemical peels may also offer more dramatic results depending on your skin concerns.

There are also many products you can find online that market themselves as microdermabrasion kits. These kits are ranging from as low as $19. Note that all of these products are not actually providing anything close to the actual treatment. Most of the kits are just tools that suction your skin which can actually cause bruising and damage. Simply sucking does not constitute microdermabrasion.

Before trying microdermabrasion myself, I had been complaining to my dermatologist about small scars I have had for years and little bumps on my forehead that never seem to fade. She told me that adding a microdermabrasion treatment to my next facial would directly target my skin concerns and she was right.

I ended up trying microdermabrasion for the first time this month and I was very impressed by the results. I noticed a difference in my skin immediately after the treatment. My skin felt softer, looked brighter, and my pores looked visibly smaller. I have struggled with big pores on my nose for years and this was the first time I saw a real difference. I paired the treatment with my normal acne facial, which usually leaves my skin looking red and scabby for a few days. I was shocked to see that after the microdermabrasion, you would never have known I just had a needle poked into my pimples. It has now been about two weeks since the appointment, and I see many lasting results: My skin feels less congested, my complexion looks brighter and more even, and my pores are still less visible.

While the price of the treatment seems daunting, try asking your dermatologist if they think you would be a good candidate and look into a place that takes your insurance (my facials are totally covered because acne is considered a medical concern). Overall, I am very happy with the results and I am looking forward to the next time I am back in LA and can have another treatment.
