Sustainable Basics for $30 and Under

written by ERICA DICK. August 11th, 2020

Disclaimer: When we started this article it was called “Amazon Pieces for Under $15.” But after reading over everything that’s been happening with fast fashion, oh and about Jeff Bezos being a scum of a human being, we’re trying to veer away from this area. Of course, we love our cheap beauty finds as much as the next girl. But, we’re also here to do the research so we can give you the good stuff! So, we decided that the 15 extra dollars that are going to ethical, sustainable brands are totally worth it. Check out what we, and the planet, are loving below:

Everlane:

Although it’s controversial how sustainable Everlane really is in relation to their claims, they supersede Forever 21 and Zara by far. While their carbon footprint isn’t especially low, they do try to stick to recycled fabrics and instill ethical manufacturing practices, vocally advocating for their workers’ rights.

Their simple Graphic T and Cotton Tank come in multiple colors and can be worn lounging around at home with sweats or paired with jeans and boots for something a bit nicer.

Free People: Sustainability Shop

Despite Free People’s hippie style, it has been under the same scrutiny as most fast fashion companies. Their response was to create a sustainability shop with items that are vintage, eco-friendly, and/or ethically made.

My accessory picks from this collection are the Scrunchie Set ($20) and Crew Socks ($14).

Girlfriend Collective:

One of the most sustainable activewear companies around, Girlfriend Collective perfectly merges eco-friendly manufacturing with reasonably low prices. Their fabrics are almost entirely recycled, or reused discards from other companies. They also give a sustainability rating for each product they sell.

Their Florence Tank ($18) comes in tons of different colors and can be worn with anything. I’m also obsessed with their Seamless Undies ($14) which could easily take down Victoria Secret’s unethical, poorly made equivalent in a head to head match.
