Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay

written by ERICA DICK. August 3rd, 2020

This container of dry 100% natural bentonite clay has been deemed the hidden, acne-clearing gem. Priced at only $7.99 on Amazon and Target, celebrities like Lili Reinhart and Khloe Kardashian have been raving about it all over social media. And my one question is, why?

First off, the clay comes in a dry powder which the instructions recommend mixing with Apple Cider Vinegar. Never, I repeat, never, smear this amount of ACV on your face. It is a pure acid (not in the same family as AHAs or BHAs). Unless you’re using it as a sparing spot treatment, it will burn your skin and cause a harsh and painful reaction.

So mix with water instead then, right? While this makes the mask totally safe to use, I’ve tried this over a dozen times and the final product is always chunky, messy and not worth the ordeal. While the idea is fantastic, the execution sucks.

No matter how bad your acne is, you want to make sure that any drying product is typically countered with softer products so as to not cause irritation. Even when mixed with water, this mask becomes a goopy, uncomfortable product that leaves my face feeling like any last drop of hydration was sucked out of it.

That being said, natural bentonite itself and other charcoal masks are great for acne, if you ever see it in other face masks. Some we love are Kiehl’s Mud Mask , Origins Clear Improvement, and Fresh Umbrian Clay Mask.

Aztec Secret Healing Clay, though? You didn’t make the cut.
