Our Must-Have Summer Products

written by THE DISH STAFF. July 30th, 2020

In no particular order, here are some of the products we haven’t been able to live without this summer.

Noa’s Picks:

Poof Part Powder ($34)

Although it may sound odd, the Supergoop scalp sunscreen powder is on the top of my list. I don’t think my hair part has changed since the third grade when my heinous bangs finally grew out. This means the same piece of skin is constantly exposed each time I go outside. In my opinion, nothing is worse than the dreaded scalp burn. Who wants their scalp to itch, peel and then look like you have the worst case of dandruff? After complaining about a bad burn, Erica suggested I look into a scalp sunscreen. I had never heard of such a thing and now I wish I had known about it years ago. This powder is like magic. Before I go outside I just spray a few puffs along my part and then massage the powder in with my fingers for a few seconds and it becomes completely unnoticeable. It feels similar to dry shampoo and is so easy to use. This powder has become a staple in my everyday routine, and if you experience scalp burns consider adding it into yours!

Living Proof Weightless Spray ($36)

I always hated the way my hair looks when I let it dry naturally because it seems to instantly get frizzy. At my last hair cut, my hairdresser said she could clearly see I had been using too much heat and it was visibly ruining my hair (yikes). She challenged me to go as long as I could without any heat application. And well, it’s been almost 6 months now since I have used a hot tool on my hair and I give all credit to the Living Proof Spray. When I get out of the shower I first towel dry and then throw it right up into a Turbie Twist ($15) for about 15 minutes. Then, when my hair is still plenty damp I spray the Living Proof spray all throughout my hair and brush that through. And I’m done. No more spending 30+ minutes blow drying or straightening. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying this is a magical spray that will turn curly hair straight like a straightener. However, it gave me the confidence to allow my hair to dry naturally for the first time in years. It is a no fuss way to get rid of the frizz that is always amplified in the summer heat.

Rebecca’s Picks:

D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops ($38)

After struggling with bad acne, my dermatologist suggested I undergo laser treatments. Don’t get me wrong, these treatments were the best thing to ever happen to me. However, five rounds of V Beam and Smooth Beam did come at a cost other than just the price: I can’t get any color on my face. No matter how much time I spend in the sun (with sunscreen of course!), and no matter how dark my body gets, my face does. not. change. color. This forced me to get creative with how I can darken the skin tone of my face, especially during the summer when my body looks darker. One thing that has finally helped is Drunk Elephant’s D Bronzi Sunshine Drops. All I do is add a few drops to either my moisturizer or sunscreen at the end of my morning skincare routine. Once I rub that in my face, it immediately goes from a pale vampire to sun kissed lady! It blends in so seamlessly and I use it everyday. I couldn’t recommend this product more for those with similar struggles, or if you tend to wear hats while tanning to protect your face from all the bad UV rays!

Le Labo Noir 29 ($192)

I’ve never been the girl with a signature scent. That was until I discovered Le Labo. I was turned onto Le Labo when I lived in Australia with an Instagram Influencer who gave me the rest of her Le Labo avocado body lotion. I fell in love with it immediately and decided to look into their perfumes, which seemed to be becoming every girl’s go-to. The first thing I noticed was the price. This is not an ‘affordable’ product. That’s why it took me over a year after discovering the brand to take the plunge and invest in one of their products with my own money. But boy I am glad that I did. After sampling all of their perfumes at the perfume counter at Nordstrom, I knew that I had finally found MY signature scent: The Noir 29. This is the best smelling perfume I have ever come across, and it has quickly become a staple in my daily routine. I can’t go outside without getting asked what scent I’m wearing. And the smell is so refreshing it can be worn all year long.

Erica’s Picks:

SPF Setting Spray

I think the most stressful part of going out in the summer for me is keeping my makeup clean and drip-free while simultaneously spending hours in the sun. While I typically don’t wear more than mascara and a tinted moisturizer, the last thing I want is a cakey, smudged face at the beach. That’s why reapplying face sunscreen is often at the bottom of people’s lists. Nothing sounds worse than smearing a runny, goey coat of face sunscreen over your flawless, hours worth of makeup application. That’s what the Supergoop SPF setting spray has become my most used summer product for running around town or heading to the beach with friends. The tiny little bottle fits in any bag and merely requires a spritz or two on your face to not only set in your makeup but also to reapply an entire coat of SPF 40. It’s like the SPF gods heard my calls and finally answered.

Cucumber Gel Mask ($55)

Ever laid too long in the sun and now have to deal with the red and inflamed face staring back at you in the mirror? I’ve been there a million times. While I love the summer sunshine, it’s a common mistake to forget to reapply face sunscreen the required every 2 hours. Especially if your skin routine contains acids and retinol like mine does, it’s easy to find yourself basking in the sun one moment and repairing the damage of a hot, peeling nose the second. That’s why I absolutely love the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask. It’s aloe base also contains cucumber, chamomile and papaya extracts to soothe irritated skin. You can reapply as frequently as you’d like and can even leave it on overnight for a deep hydrating treatment. I love to keep it in the fridge for an extra cool and refreshing face treatment.
