We all know “maskne” is a real thing and it’s a bitch. Having to wear a mask combined with the added stress we have all been under is a recipe for breakouts. Wearing a mask causes a moisture-rich environment to build up which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Since not wearing a mask isn’t an option, there are things we can do to prevent maskne breakouts from occurring.
Wash your mask after every use. Yes, every use. This is why it’s good to have a few different masks rather than just one, so if one is drying and you need to head back outside you are fully stocked. If you aren’t washing your mask (especially after wearing makeup or sunscreen), you are putting on a contaminated mask back onto your face that’s filled with all the microbes that have been growing since you took it off and left it on your counter. Gross.
If you have been sweating at all under your mask then it’s extra important to take it off, clean it, and put on a fresh one.
When you need to take a quick break from wearing your mask don’t just pull it down to your neck. If you do this, you’re contaminating the inside of the mask with all the dirt and bacteria from that skin. And then, when you pull it back up you’re exposing your face to all that dirt. Instead, just fully take off your mask until you’re ready to put it back on.
Look for a cotton mask if your skin is on the oilier side! Check out this pack of three for only $12.
Wash your face before putting on the mask to make sure you are getting rid of any build-up on your skin. If there are bacteria and dirt on your face and you put the mask over that, that’s a recipe for a breakout.
Wait 30 minutes before putting on your mask after you have applied your morning serums and SPF to give them the chance to fully absorb into your skin and not be wiped off by the fabric.
Now is certainly not the time to skimp on the skincare routine. Try adding retinol into your routine if you aren’t using one already and are experiencing acne flare-ups. Don’t forget to moisturize. Even if you think your skin is too oily, you still need it!
